6 TIPS FOR CHOOSING A HIGH CHAIR
Your little one’s ready to start weaning… it’s time for a high chair! But how do you choose one that’s right for your family? Find out here…
We know that having a baby brings with it LOTS of things you’ll need, from the stroller to the crib, the baby grows, muslins and everything in between! And at some point along the way, once your baby is able to sit up and almost certainly once you start weaning, you’ll want to consider investing in a high chair.
There are many options out there, with many different features, so how can you find one that will suit your needs best? First off, check out our simple tips to get you started and make that high chair buying journey hopefully a little less stressful! Take a look…
1. KNOW YOUR BUDGET - AND STICK TO IT
You may have discovered just how many things there are to buy when you have a new baby, so be sure you know exactly how much you’ve got to spend on this particular item and try not to go over it if you can.
The good news is, there are so many high chairs out there at a range of different prices, you should find one to suit your wallet.
Of course, if you’re happy to spend big time, you’ll find one that suits! But equally, if you want to keep some money to hand for those other items that you’re bound to need at some point, worry not - there are some great chairs that won’t break the bank.
2. THINK ABOUT THE SPACE YOU HAVE
If you have limited space in your kitchen (or wherever you’ll be feeding your baby) you might want to go for a high chair that folds away easily and which won’t be kept up at all times.
A travel high chair could be an option, though if you don’t fancy putting it up and down all the time, another idea is to opt for one that clips onto a table you already use - like other high chairs, suitable to use once your baby can sit up by themselves.
3. CONSIDER HOW EASY THE CLEAN UP WILL BE
One thing’s for sure - your baby’s high chair will be covered in food and spills a lot of the time! So do check when you buy that the model you’ve chosen is as simple as you need it to be in terms of cleaning. For example - are the surfaces easy to wipe clean? Can certain parts go in the dishwasher?
Not the most exciting part of making your decision, we know, but one well worth thinking about before you pay up!
4. GO FOR STYLE AND LONGEVITY
One thing’s for sure, your high chair will get a lot of use - especially if you have more than one child, so going for one that will last - and has a timeless look - is no bad idea.
Norwegian brand Stokke has been making its famous Tripp Trapp chair since 1972: people love it for its minimalist, sleek wood finish and the fact your child can use it until they’re around 12 - as it turns into a regular chair.
So, as far as investment pieces go - we reckon this model’s up there and well worth considering if you like to buy once, and buy well.
5. CHOOSE PORTABILITY IF YOU’LL FIND IT USEFUL
If you’re a family who likes to travel, or visit friends, you might want to go for a chair that’s portable and foldable as your “main” high chair or just to have as another option.
Having a travel high chair takes the stress out of feeding your baby in an unfamiliar chair or worrying about whether there will be one at that holiday home you booked. In addition, sometimes little ones like the security that comes with a space they know when eating a meal.
6. REMEMBER THE ACCESSORIES
Bear in mind too, there are lots of “add-ons” you can invest in choosing a high chair, such as cushion sets for added comfort while your child is in a chair, storage sets for putting muslins and cutlery in, and clip-on trays.
If you don’t think you’ll use them, save your money. But if you do go for a separate item from the chair you’re buying, do make sure the accessories you purchase are compatible!
