THE NAME GAME

Choosing a name for your baby can be tough: we reached out to our Instagram community for tips on how they did it and we’ve added a few suggestions of our own to help you out…

There’s no doubt that choosing a name for your new baby is a BIG decision, and you might find it hard to know where to start on deciding on a moniker for your little bundle of joy.

Worry not - we’ve got a few simple tips to get you started or at least help you in the right direction.

We also asked parents in our Insta community (be sure to check out our Instagram if you haven't already!) to see how they decided on the perfect name for their little one.

There’s nothing too out of the ordinary here, just a few ideas that may get you exploring various routes you may not even have considered. Remember though to keep it fun - it’s a big decision but should also be one you enjoy spending time on!

6 TIPS FOR CHOOSING A BABY NAME

1. ASK PEOPLE YOU TRUST FOR ADVICE

We think family and friends would be positively honored if you reached out to ask for their help on choosing a name for your baby! And they might just come up with some ideas you’d never thought of. On Instagram, @tai.mourkhan told us their child’s name is Taimour Ali Khan:

“Taimour means "self respecting”. It was sooo difficult to choose a name for my baby. So we asked our relatives and friend's opinions and we came up with so many unique and beautiful names. This name was suggested by his uncle and my hubby selected this for our little one.”

2. GO CLASSIC AND BEAUTIFUL SO IT WILL TRANSLATE

Sometimes those really old, classic names just work best. If you have family and friends that span the continents, as a lot of us do these days, going for a name that can be understood and easily spoken by all can work really well.

@lillanutten told us they went for the name “Iris” - as it’s “easy to spell, works internationally, [and is] classic but not extremely usual.”

3. USE THE INTERNET OR A BABY NAME BOOK TO HELP

Hello worldwide web! We use Google for so much else in life - why not go online to help you with a baby name too! If you have some themes or ideas in mind, simply type some search words in and see what happens! @tarajoyzimbabwe advised they went for “Bodhi” explaining: “We wanted something unusual that could be for a boy or girl - we also wanted a B to match our surname which is B. Did some Googling and found Bodhi! We knew it was the name for us!”

If you'd rather go old-school, buy a name book (as big as you dare!) and have a look through - highlighting or listing names you like as you go.

4. CHOOSE THE NAME OF SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE

What better way to honor someone you really look up to than by naming your baby after them! Whether that means going for a family name, after a much-loved relative, or a much-loved film star or musician, we think it’s a lovely tribute to someone who means a lot to you! Titti.eliasson tells us she went for: “Loui, After a really good hockey player.” Love it!

"Names are the sweetest and most important sound in any language." Dale Carnegie, American author

5. CONSIDER GOING FOR A NAME WITH A MEANING YOU LOVE

Many names, especially traditional ones, have a meaning behind them, and if it’s a sentiment you love, it can really help you make a decision on one name over another. @wildprettygirl told us: “We were looking for a name all throughout the pregnancy and couldn’t come up with one. We even had a shortlist of about 20 names written on a piece of paper and in the last few months we were asking friend and relatives opinions.

“Then we shortlisted to 3 names and chose from them only in the maternity hospital after giving birth and looking at the little guy. By the way - Theodore from Greek is translated as “God’s Gift”.

We also love the fact @wildprettygirl here mentions that they decided on a name after seeing their son, and for some this can make a big difference - but that’s a whole other article!

6. LOOK AT THE TOP BABY NAMES LISTS

Various websites publish the most popular baby names for a particular country every year - and they can be a great way of getting an idea of what’s hot in the world of baby names!

You might find a name you love and be happy that many others love it too, though we also get that some of you might use it as a way to avoid a particular name if you’re keen to make sure you go for something a bit more unusual.

To get you started, we’ve listed the 10 most popular baby names for 2020 in France, Sweden, Japan, South Korea and the USA.

AND FINALLY...

Choosing a name for your little one can hopefully be something fun and, while it can take some time to plump for the right name, we reckon that when it feels right - you’ll know it! We know there are LOTS of other dilemmas when it comes to the name game, such as:

- should you wait until you see your baby to decide the name?

- should you tell people the baby’s name before they arrive?

- what if you can’t agree with your partner on a name?

- does it go with the surname?

But above all, choosing a name for your little one can hopefully be something fun and, while it can take some time to plump for the right name, we reckon that when it feels right - you’ll know!
