Use the three layer method to make sure you’re well protected: a base layer for removing moisture, a mid-layer to keep you warm, and an outer layer to protect you from the elements. Baselayers are often made of breathable and mositure-wicking technical materials or naturally temperature regulating materials like merino wool. The purpose is to keep away moisture and keep you dry. The purpose of the mid layer is insulation and warmth. The mid layer will keep you warm by conserving your body heat and wicking away the moisture. A thicker wool sweater or a fleece sweater and fleece pants works well for this. The outer layer is the shell that protects you from the elements. Use a jacket, pants or a snowsuit that is wind and waterpoof but still has good breathability and you are sure to be comfortable no matter the weather.
